The Whangaparaoa Chelsea Cup team suffered an extremely close loss to Ngataringa, last Friday night.
Chester Espie playing at number 1 had an epic battle against highly ranked Liam Stoica, prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
Alex Hamilton, who is so far unbeaten in this years competition, had a solid win against Rudi Statkus 7-6, 6-4
Freddie Cashmore Chatwin, and Fraser Croad (back on court after being out for six weeks with a sprained ankle) battled hard but lost their singles matches.
Going into the doubles matches , the fixture was tied at 2-2. Ngataringa brought in an ex Davis Cup doubles specialist for the top doubles match and strategically played their Number 1 and 2 singles players in the bottom doubles match.
Chester Espie & Alex Hamilton had a great win in the top doubles match, playing very solid tennis and taking out the match, 10-4 in the super tiebreak.
Freddie Cashmore-Chatwin & Fraser Croad won a tight first set 7-6 before losing the second set 6-2. A super tiebreak would then determine the outcome of the fixture, with Freddie & Fraser needing to win to prevent Whangaparaoa from losing on a countback of sets.
At 9-8 to Ngataringa, our boys setup some beautiful play, to keep the match alive, but our smash went less than an inch long and Ngataringa won the all important super tiebreak.
Whilst being very disappointed with such a close loss, the team picked up a valuable 3 points and are sitting in equal second place on the table, only 1 point behind the leader.
