From the Umpire’s Chair – August 2018

Hi everyone and welcome to the beginning of a new tennis season. We hope it will be fun-filled. It is all hands to the pump as we prepare for the start of the new season – marketing, interclub, coaching, juniors, etc – but here are some significant items since the last newsletter.

Events
We have held successful Mens and Ladies Day tournaments and also celebrated the end of last season with prizegiving for club champs and also other “notable achievements”. These events were tremendous fun and thank you to the participants and organisers of these events. There is also the upcoming trip to Wairakei Resort near Taupo (24-25 August) which should be a fun time (email went out about this on 19 June) with ~10-12 couples registered thus far.

AGM
The meeting on 1 July went smoothly with no resolutions put forward to the meeting, with myself and Sarah Mayo being re-elected to President and Executive Member respectively. Simon Yock was elected Club Captain to replace Dave Bennett. A massive thank you to Dave for all his involvement over the years in his role, what a legend.

Clubhouse refresh
We will be giving the clubhouse an interior fitout – lighting, carpet, furniture etc – to modernise the space. How we go about this and the extent of work required is yet to be decided but we are very keen on hearing from you, especially if you have any contacts in the industry (design, products, trades etc.). We will be sending out a survey in the near future asking for your feedback. It is your club!

Fees for next year
The Executive have set the fees for next year. The club has a healthy bank balance (some will be used for clubhouse refresh) and we have decided to maintain the fees at the same level as last year. These fees are very competitive compared to other sports (including tennis) clubs. The fees are below, and payment plans can be arranged with Steve Lay (our treasurer). Steve will be sending out the membership fee invoices shortly.

Feel free to discuss any of the above items with myself or other Executive officers.

I look forward to seeing you soon, either on or off the court. Have a tremendous season.

Brendon Forbes
President.
